The Benefits of the Server Uniform

If you run a catering business you'll likely find that a lot of events wind up being a buffet service but there will still be plenty of events where individual service is ordered and guest tables will need to be waited on by servers.  With server staff on hand for your catering business, you'll need to decide how you're going to dress them.  There are a few ways to approach the uniform issue for your staff and each has its pros and cons

Consistent Uniform - One of the best ways to make your staff easy to spot and to turn them into a walking billboard for your company is to create a consistent uniform that they will wear to every event.  With a consistent uniform, the color and design never changes, and your logo remains prominent however you choose to display it.

The upside to the consistent uniform is that it keeps your costs simple, especially for laundry.  Getting replacements is easy as well.  This also leads away from the standard, boring and rather formal white shirt, black tie that many servers wear.

The downside is that if you require your staff to wear a uniform that is custom, you'll have to eat the cost.  It's not appropriate to make your staff pay for the uniform - at least not the first round.  If they need replacements down the road beyond a minimum number of replacements you can have them cover the cost.  Also, with a set uniform model you'll need to come up with a formal and informal version of your uniform to make it appropriate for all events.  This could include having a fair weather and a hot weather option incase you're doing outdoor events with the sun beating down.

Custom Uniforms - Another option that is a bit lofty, but could be endearing to your guests, is to make custom uniforms for the events so that your staff matches.  That is, they match each other as well as the color scheme or theme of the catered event.

The upside to this is that your staff blends in appropriate while standing out.  It's clear that they are there as servers working the room.  Guests and clients will appreciate the attention to detail and the care you've put into their event with this gesture as well.  If you save uniforms in a wardrobe, these custom uniforms may be reused later for similarly themed events or where the colors match.

The downside is that uniform cost has to be figured into event costs and could drive up the price considerably depending on the number of servers required.  Likewise, you'll need to work with aa uniform company that can do a quick turnaround on custom orders so you're not left at the last minute without uniforms for the staff.

Catering Supplies - Should the Kitchen Match? You don't necessarily need to make your kitchen staff match the servers.  In most cases, having them work in their white coats and puffy chef pants is probably the most comfortable thing you can do for them.
